"It’s been thirty years since the release of Ang L

"It’s been thirty years since the release of Ang Lee’s Sense and Sensibility. This is a film that has made deliberate choices to distance itself from its Nineties cousin... This Sense and Sensibility lacks the warmth and humour of Thompson’s screenplay. In its place is a distinct uneasiness: the Dashwoods have seen how quickly their lives can be upended: they take nothing for granted. The playing of the youngest Dashwood sister, Margaret, by Bodhi Rae Breathnach, is subdued and wary. Even as she stuffs her face with Dartmoor blackberries, you get the impression it’s less about indulging the senses than finding comfort after a great deal of upheaval.

The question is whether this interpretation of Austen’s novel works for you. If you were feeling ungenerous, you could criticise the 1996 film for its historically inaccurate brightness, and cast that came largely from Emma Thompson’s address book. Although eyeing the credits of this version, the number of double-barrelled surnames hint at a cast that would know instinctively what fork to use. The cynics among us would note the lack of class diversity still present in the film world, thirty years on.

It’s not so much about saying which film is best, but fans will have their favourite. While Ang Lee’s interpretation of Austen is rightly now a classic, Georgia Oakley has found nuance and depth in Austen’s love of the 18th century that feels genuine. Oakley’s Sense and Sensibility is definitely darker and sombre, which means it will resonate with some, while leaving others cold. But in Oakley’s realism, there is still a love and respect for the characters and the novel itself. Your perception of this film will come down to a matter of personal taste, and how you like your Austen. But Oakley knows she can look forward to an eager reception from a group of fans who’ve been very, very patient. Janeites, assemble."

SENSE AND SENSIBILITY is screening from 2 – 8 October, with a Knitflix screening on Saturday 3rd, where you can bring your own crafts to work on.

"Plymouth and cinema have been rare bedfellows...

"Plymouth and cinema have been rare bedfellows...

That’s a real shame, because we surely have all the grit, guts and history you need for a perfect storyline to write itself. Well, if it’s proper guts you’re looking for, you can look no further than Colin Gregg’s REMEMBRANCE (1982). Here we follow a group of navy ratings ready to let off some steam before they head off on HMS Raleigh, right on the brink of the Falklands War (although they didn’t know that at the time it was made). They’re young, they’re reckless, they’re sailors, they’re looking for a night to remember (if they’re able) – so of course they’re heading out to the legendary Union St… Oh dear indeed…

Anyone who grew up here around this time (eighties as shown in the film, nineties for me) will no doubt feel a profound pull of recognition to see the Street they (mis)spent their youth kicking around – and probably getting a kicking or two as well – reflected back at them on the big screen. The interiors of locally-famous haunts The Two Trees and The Phoenix feature within and are bound to set a few nostalgic fingers pointing as well.

The stellar cast is noticeably juvenile – including babyfaced Gary Oldman (Slow Horses) in his big-screen debut – as well as younger models of Timothy Spall and John Altman (who grew up to be Eastenders’ Nick Cotton).

All of which makes Remembrance the perfect fit for “Rip It Up” – a season of films celebrating what it feels like to be young in the city.

So, are you ready to relive the best-worst days of your life? Let’s Rip It Up and start again…"

REMEMBRANCE is screening at Plymouth Arts Cinema from 2nd – 8th October, with an introduction on Friday 2nd from screenwriter Hugh Stoddart.
