From Italian director Moretti (The Son’s Room) this quirky comedy drama was one of the most talked about films of Cannes 2011. Cardinal Melville, played with sympathy and humour by 85-year-old Michel Piccoli (Belle de Jour), is the new pontiff but he doesn’t take too well to his new role. To help him adapt, The Vatican hire unorthodox psychiatrist Professor Brezzi (Moretti) to assist him in coming to terms with the challenges ahead of him. Light-hearted and fun, We Have A Pope also examines deeper themes, including the burden of expectation and the role of the church, to make it one of the best international films of 2011.
